(And if you’re a fan of using your Instant Pot, I highly recommend adding this Instant Pot Philly Cheesesteak recipe to your weekly meal plan!)
Cooking from scratch used to be a monumental task. In fact, back in your grandmother or great grandmother’s day, there were no box mixes, ready-made foods or the endless supply of grab bag options found in your local grocery store. If you wanted convenience foods you had to visit your own pantry and create them.
In those days if you wanted a pie, you made the crust from flour, sugar, and butter and then added the fruit filling you likely canned yourself. Today we have it so much simpler. We can go to the grocery and procure almost anything we need. However, all of this convenience comes with a price, pun intended. The convenience foods we buy are more costly than their from scratch counterparts and honestly, they are not as healthy because they contain preservatives and often other stabilizing chemicals added in to give them a longer shelf life.
If you have no idea how to begin cooking from scratch, you have come to the right place. Here are some simple recipes that you can implement this week that will help you make some small baby steps towards cooking those meals the old fashioned way.
From Scratch Brownies
Brownies don’t all come from a box and Betty Crocker hasn’t cornered the market. The funny thing is that once you taste homemade, you may have trouble going back to the store-bought mix. Ready to be amazed? These brownies can be made completely from scratch in only 6-7 minutes longer than ready mix box brownies! That’s why I love this homemade Betty Crocker Copycat recipe of their fudge brownies!
From Scratch Pizza Crust
Homemade pizza is so much easier than you might think. It is a total healthier trade that is so very cost-effective. This recipe is a go-to must-have for busy moms and the bonus is that it can be frozen. Making the crust from scratch will take you less than 10 minutes.
From Scratch Hamburger Buns
The best part about making your own buns is that they are not just for hamburgers. You can have any sandwich buns in a matter of 20 minutes, or just make them a bit smaller and turn them into rolls for dinner. Though this recipe requires yeast, it does not require rising times which is what makes it so quick and easy. Give it a try this week.
From Scratch Egg Noodles
These aren’t as hard as one might think because there are only 5 ingredients. You can even to do without the milk by adding water as a replacement and cut it down to 4 ingredients. Then it is just rolling and cutting – not too bad. This blogger has great pictures to go along with her recipe. Check this one out and enjoy making some chicken noodle soup by adding some chicken broth to the finished noodles (drying the noodles is not necessary)
From Scratch Pancakes
If you are still using Bisquick or some other pancake mix, now is the time to step outside your comfort zone and begin anew. Pancakes are an easy fix and here is a fantastic recipe that even has a secret ingredient. Just be forewarned, you may never be able to go back to the box mix. You simply make this up ahead by using just the dry ingredients and then add the wet ingredients when you are ready in the morning!
I hope these ideas help give you some motivation this week to find something to cook from scratch.
