If you’ve spent more than five minutes on Pinterest, you’ve probably seen your fair share of cleaning hacks – tips and tricks involving stuff you probably already have in your home that make tackling your mess easier than ever. The next time you’re ready to clean your home, don’t make it such a chore – pun intended! Instead, tackle the mess with one (or all!) of these cleaning hacks that actually work:
Wipe down windows with newspaper for a streak-free shine.
This is one of the oldest cleaning hacks in the book, but it’s still around today because it really does work. Wiping down your windows with paper towels or other fabrics can leave behind unwanted fibers that cling to the glass and leave your panes less-than-perfect. Apply your favorite glass cleaner or mix up a quick solution of water, vinegar and a small amount of liquid soap first. Then, use your newspaper to scrub your windows in a circular motion for a perfect polish!
Use dryer sheets to clean your shower door
From freshening up your laundry to dusting your baseboards, dryer sheets have a million uses around the home – but I bet you didn’t know about this one! You can actually use dryer sheets to remove soap scum from your shower door. Why? The same ingredients that allow dryer sheets to soften fabrics actually help them soften other stuff, too, allowing them to eat away at the soapy remnants left behind over time. To try this one, simply moisten a dryer sheet and wipe down the surface until it’s up to par.
Clean your microwave with a little vinegar.
Microwaves can get pretty gross if they aren’t cleaned often. The next time you’re stuck scraping leftover gunk off the top of the microwave, try this trick to make the cleaning process much, much easier! Combine equal parts water and vinegar into a microwave-safe bowl and let it heat up in the microwave for about ten minutes. Be careful when you’re done – use oven mitts to prevent splashes or spills.
This one does come with an incredibly tiny risk of explosion – dramatic, I know! If you’re concerned, adding a toothpick or wooden spoon to the microwave as your water heats will eliminate any risk.
Coat your air vents with wax to keep dust at bay.
My air vents are some of my least favorite things to clean in my house. I hate teetering on a chair or ladder, trying to brush away the dust without sending too much to the floor. That’s why this trick is one of my favorites!
The next time you need to clean your air vents, remove them from the wall and give them a little TLC by applying a thin layer of wax to both sides. I recommend using car wax – it’s cheap and easy to find. The wax creates a protective layer over the vent that keeps the dust from sticking, which means you won’t have to worry about dusting your air vents very often!
Tackle the mess in your oven with baking soda and water.
Baking soda is my favorite home cleaner. It eliminates odors, lifts stains and stuck-on spots, and is environmentally friendly. There are tons of useful ways to handle at-home messes with baking soda, but my personal favorite hack is for cleaning the inside of your oven. The oven can be one of the worst things in your house to clean – but with baking soda, it can be a breeze! Make a paste out of baking soda and water and apply it to the inside of your oven. Let it sit for a few hours – or overnight, if your mess is particularly bad – and wipe everything down with a wet cloth when you’re ready.
So there you have it, folks – my favorite cleaning hacks that actually work! Have you been amazed by any of the tips mentioned above, or do you have a few tricks up your sleeve you’d like to share? Leave a comment and let us know!
